The most valuable safety tip we learned is that if a wave is coming it’s better to stay put and let your shoes get wet rather than try to make a run for it and slip.Įd itorial note: The Montage hosted Kristi and her family at The Loft. Note to parents: The tidepools at the Montage are very accessible with kids of all ages and are located almost directly in front of the main beach stairs. This was the highlight of our dinner and so much fun. Each cheese is paired with homemade condiments and the final product is a work of art when it arrives at the table. He helped each of us choose a couple of cheeses based on our preferences and made the kids feel like their opinions were very important. With over 150 cheeses to choose from you’ll welcome help from the fromagier. If you are cheese lovers, don’t miss the cheese gallery. The service is outstanding and you really feel pampered here. Kids and fine dining don’t always mix, but the staff is so used to seeing families that the experience is relaxing as opposed to being nerve-wracking. The Loft is fine dining with an ocean view. View of the Montage from bluff side walking pathĪfter our tidepool experience we headed up to The Loft for dinner. Some kids cry when they leave Paintbox mine just begged to go back. We learned a lot and now that the kids are expert “tidepoolers” we look forward to our next excursion. Our Paintbox leader was so patient and knowledgeable. While looking for sea life, we also learned a bit of pirate’s lore and legend has it that there may be pirate’s booty still buried on the beach. The Paintbox program takes advantage of the open grassy areas of the resort and the beach below to take the kids on adventures and excursions. We learned some tidepool safety tips first and then set out to find a variety of starfish and sea urchins and a few little fish. My family experienced a small part of what makes Paintbox so special - a guided tour of the tidepools in front of the resort. Paintbox Kids’ Club at Montage Laguna Beach ![]() Tidepool discovery at Paintbox Kids’ Club What I didn’t know is that you don’t have to be a guest to use it! If you are not a guest of the resort but are using the restaurant or spa or just shopping at the resort, your kids can participate in a Paintbox session. As our editor discovered when she stayed here, they also have a spectacular kids’ club called Paintbox. I pass the hotel every day on the way to my daughter’s school and appreciate how the hotel’s craftsman-style architecture blends in with the oceanfront location. ![]() The hotel is approximately a one-hour drive from both Los Angeles and San Diego, and 30 minutes from Orange County’s John Wayne International Airport.I was a fan of the Montage long before they joined Ciao Bambino’s portfolio of family-friendly hotels. Montage Resort & Spa is located on 30 acres of land in the heart of Laguna Beach. Kids can be consigned to the PaintBox, the resort’s children’s club, and the less fitness-minded adults can sit in on art classes of their own, or take a stroll through the gallery or down to the beach. Outdoor activities on offer include swimming in no fewer than three pools, and a variety of salt-water sports, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and even surfing. The facility itself is expansive, 20,000 square feet, both indoors and out. Montage’s spa overlooks the ocean as well, and offers a comprehensive list of services, from the passive (massage, hydrotherapy, facials) to the somewhat active (yoga or tai chi, with a view). Public areas have views as well, through floor-to-ceiling windows in the Loft restaurant or from the Mosaic Grille’s terrace, on the edge of the bluff fifty feet above the Pacific. The interior style is a restrained, casual elegance, classic Californian, with subdued colors and details in dark wood. The beach and ocean views are one of Montage’s main attractions, and the guest rooms all feature patios or balconies with panoramic views. The interiors are liberally decorated with artworks, some contemporary, some dating back to the heyday of the Arts & Crafts movement, which is Montage’s main inspiration. The resort itself, with its winding pathways and classic stone architecture, is surrounded by lush gardens, shaded by tall trees, and sits atop a rugged, rocky bluff, overlooking the white sand beaches below. This is the Laguna Beach of the early 1900s, the romantic vision of design in complement with nature. Montage Resort & Spa is a throwback to the Laguna Beach of the turn of the twentieth century, a conscious homage to the city’s birth as an artists’ colony. ![]()
